HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Alabama A&M baseball fell in the second game of the rivalry series against Alabama State on Saturday, despite scoring nine runs off 10 hits. The loss at Bulldog Baseball Field was the fifth straight conference loss.
The Game was a rematch of Friday's contest, where the Hornets took an 11-3 win to open the series. On Saturday, ASU (17-11, 6-2 SWAC) jumped out early with an 11-0 lead after four to take control of the game and never looked back.
With two outs in the frame, the Hornets scored on a trio of RBI doubles along with an RBI single in between for the four run first. They added to their lead in the third and fourth that included a combined three homers over the next two frames.
The Bulldogs (10-14, 2-6 SWAC) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, ending the ongoing shutout.
Chandler Stocking doubled to right center with one out to drive home both
Blake Martin and
Jalen Parker for the first two scores, followed later by an RBI double from
CJ Mervilus to drive Stocking home.
After another run from the Hornets in the top of the sixth, A&M tacked on four more runs, as
Tommy Easley started the bottom half of the inning with a single, and later scored along with Martin on another double from Stocking, who finished with four RBI on the day. On the next-at bat,
Kenny Glover hit his first homer of the year with a bomb to left field to cut the deficit to 12-7.
Both teams scored a run in the seventh, however Alabama State ensured the win with another three scores in the top of the eighth and another in the ninth for the 17-9 win.
Glover, Easley, and Stocking all recorded two hits each, as Stocking drove in a game-high four runs as well.
Evan Crenshaw (2-3) started the game on the mound for the Bulldogs, allowing eight earned runs and ten hits while striking out two batters. Meanwhile, four other pitchers came in out of the bullpen, including time from Terence Sles (1.1 IP),
Dustin Hernandez (2 IP),
Jason Garcia (1.1 IP), and
Anthony Mateo (1.2 IP).
