Bulldogs Fall Short in Series Finale Against Bethune-Cookman

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. __ Trailing by a run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Alabama A&M (22-18, 13-10 SWAC) could not convert, hitting a pair of pop ups to see A&M fall 3-2 to Bethune Cookman on Sunday.

The Bulldogs got on board first in the series finale, as Allyson Riches singled to left field to start the inning before Serena Herbranson drove her in with a double to right field to take a 1-0 lead.

A&M held on to the despite the Wildcats loading the bases in the top of the second, however Bethune Cookman capitalized in the top of the fourth to tie the game.

After a single up the middle to start the inning, a one-out triple drove in the score for the 1-1 game. The Wildcats crossed the plate again in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead, using a pair of hits to pick up the score.

The Bulldogs responded to tie the game for the second time, starting with Calia Rooks earning a bunt single with one out. Rooks advanced on a ground ball before scoring on a well hit ball up the middle by Riches for the 2-2 game after five.

Bethune-Cookman scored their final run in the sixth, using back-to-back singles leading off the inning and a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. The Wildcats took the 3-2 lead on a passed ball before the close of the frame.

Three runners were left on base in the bottom sixth inning by the Bulldogs, as two were hit by pitches, while one drew a walk, loading the bases. The seventh and final inning ended in a similar situation as Riches and Brooklyn Wallace recorded singles to start, followed later by a walk to load the bases for the second time, however two pop ups ended the game.

Riches led the team at the plate with a 3-for-4 day, along with one RBI and a run. Rooks went a perfect 2-for-2 and scored the second run, as the Bulldogs earned seven total hits in the contest.
