Bulldogs Come Up Short in Weekend Road Series Finale

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama A&M baseball dropped the third and final game of the weekend series against rival Alabama State on Sunday afternoon by a score of 10-3 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

The Hornets gained command of the series finale with a steady dose of offense, scoring in five innings on the day, including three runs in both the sixth and eighth.

With a solo home run in the first and sacrifice fly in the third, they led 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning, before a two-out bunt single by Chevalier Dorris started a rally by A&M. Chandler Stocking was hit by a pitch on the next at-bat, before freshman Mekhi Lloyd drove both runners home with a double down the right field line to tie the game contest.

Alabama State took a 4-2 lead in the bottom half of the fifth, putting their first runner on with a walk, followed by an RBI double to left field to break the tie, followed later by a sacrifice fly to left to gain the two-run edge.

After a scoreless at-bat from Alabama A&M, the Hornets extended their lead in the sixth, pounding out three hits and turning in three scores to make the score 7-2 before a strikeout to end the inning. Three more runs were added in the eighth to go up 10-2, before CJ Mervilus crossed the plate to add the final run for A&M in the top of the ninth.

A&M starter Noah Whitted (2-6) went 5.1 innings in the loss, allowing six runs on five hits with two walks. Gabe Nicholson and Jason Garcia came from the bullpen to combine to pitch the final 2.2 innings of play.

ASU starter Shadai Colon, the first of just two Hornet pitchers, got the win to improve his record to 5-0.

Lloyd and Tribett had two hits each for the Bulldogs, while Trenton Jamison and Ali Lapread led the way for the home team going 2-for-3 on the day.
