Bulldogs Drop Series Opener 5-3 in Game Shortened Due to Weather

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A pair of runs in the top of the seventh gave Mississippi Valley State the first win of the series on Thursday afternoon with a 5-3 game at the Bulldog Baseball Field. The seven-inning contest was cut short due to lightning and oncoming weather in the area.

Bulldog starter Tyler Campbell got off to a hot start, not allowing a baserunner in the first two innings, before allowing a single to left to open the third. The Delta Devils advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt and later with a passed ball. On the next at-bat, Mississippi Valley scored the first run of the game with another sacrifice bunt before entering the bottom of the third. N Booker extended the lead on a sacrifice bunt in the top of the fifth for the 2-0 lead.

Blake Martin earned the first hit for A&M in the opening inning, the lone hit for the home team until the fifth, with a one-out single to left field from Chandler Stocking. With runners on second and third, Mehki Lloyd drove in Chevalier Dorris with a single to left to make the game 2-1, while the Bulldogs tied the game later in the frame with a bases loaded walk drawn by Jared Tribett. Dorris and Stocking recorded consecutive two-out singles to threaten again in the sixth, before an error gave the Bulldogs a one-run edge.

Leading 3-2 after six innings, Alabama A&M gave up a pair of hits and allowed four base runners in the seventh for the final lead change of the game. After forcing a groundout to open the frame, the next batter got on despite striking out due to a passed ball and throwing error.

Campbell pitched all seven innings on the mound for the Bulldogs, allowing five runs and seven hits, while striking out two. The right-hander faced 31 batters on the day.

Stocking led A&M at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day and scoring a run, while three other batters combined for the remaining three hits in the contest.

The two programs will meet again on Friday, with a doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will celebrate senior day prior to the first pitch.
