Moodie Pours in Career-High 16 Points at Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | Chad Moodie poured in a career-high 16 points as the Alabama A&M University men's basketball team could not rally from a double-digit halftime deficit as the Bulldogs fell, 85-69, to Texas Southern in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game on Saturday at the H&PE Arena.
 
Alabama A&M (3-16 overall, 2-4 SWAC) returned from a 12-day layoff and trailed 45-30, before closing the margin to single digits, 47-38, with just over 17 minutes to play. However, Texas Southern (6-12, 4-3) used a 14-0 run to pull away for the conference victory.
 
Moodie paced the Bulldogs on 4-of-9 shooting, including 8-of-10 from the foul line. He also added four rebounds. Omari Peek scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half and grabbed four rebounds.
 
Deon Stroud scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, going 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point line, along with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. PJ Henry recorded 14 points, three boards, three assists, two steals and two blocks, while Grayson Carter chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal. Kevin Granger tossed in 10 points, one board, one assist and one steal.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams started slow as Alabama A&M jumped out to a 9-5 advantage after a Darius Osborne layup with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half.
 
The Bulldogs went cold from the floor, going more than seven minutes without a field goal, as Texas Southern used a 13-3 run, capped by a Stroud trey as the Tigers grabbed an 18-12 lead.
 
A Lorenzo Downey triple snapped the scoring drought as AAMU closed the gap to 18-15 with 8:41 left.
 
However, the Bulldogs went cold again from the field as Texas Southern stretched its lead to 30-17 after a Henry jumper with 5:20 remaining.
 
The Tigers extended the advantage to 42-25 after a Stroud dunk with 1:25 left and took a 45-30 lead into the break.
 
Alabama A&M opened the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a free throw by Chad Moodie, as the Bulldogs closed the margin to 47-38 with just over 17 minutes to play.
 
However, Texas Southern used a 14-0 run over the next four minutes, as the Tigers pushed the lead to 61-38 with 13:34 remaining.
 
Alabama A&M could not recover from the huge deficit in dropping the conference road game.
