Three Reach Double Figures in Loss to PVAMU

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team struggled in the closing moments, as the Bulldogs fell, 65-59, to Prairie View A&M in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup on Monday to William J. Nicks Building.

Alabama A&M (8-11 overall, 3-4 SWAC) went cold in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs were 20-11 in the final quarter.

Darian Burgin paced the Bulldogs with 16 points, a team-high six assists, four rebounds and three steals. Amiah Simmons registered 14 points and three rebounds, while Alisha Wilson registered 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and one assist.

Ryann Payne led PVAMU (8-9, 4-3) with a game-high 27 points, on 11-of-17, with four assists and two rebounds, while Jada Roberson registered 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and one assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams went back-and-forth early as Burgin completed a three-point play as Alabama A&M grabbed a 15-11 lead with 3:46 remaining in the opening period.

The Bulldogs stretched the advantage to 24-15, on the heels of a 9-4 run, after a Simmons layup with 20 seconds left, but the Panthers got two free throws by Payne to end the period as AAMU took a 24-17 lead into the second quarter.

AAMU extended the lead to 31-19 after a pair of free throws by LaCambria Shakespeare with 7:58 remaining.

The Bulldogs went cold from the field, going nearly six minutes without a bucket, as the Panthers closed the deficit 33-31 after a Payne layup with 1:26 remaining in the half.

PVAMU grabbed a 36-35 lead after a Payne triple, but back came AAMU as Burgin knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer, sending the Bulldogs into the break with a 38-36 advantage.

Alabama A&M pushed the margin, 46-36, following a Chynell Mitchell layup with 3:21 left in the third.

However, Prairie View A&M rallied with a 9-2 run over the final three minutes, cutting the deficit to 48-45, at the end of the period.

The Bulldogs went through a cold stretch, going nearly six minutes without a bucket, as Prairie View A&M used a 16-2 run, capped by a jumper by Payne, giving the Panthers a 65-52 lead with 2:27 remaining

Alabama A&M could not recover from the big deficit.
