THE HILL | In the final home match of the 2024 slate, the Alabama A&M University soccer team (4-9-1. 2-2-1 SWAC) defeated the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils () 5-1, paced by senior Jasmine Perez-Acosta in the senior day matinee.
Perez-Acosta tallied three shots in the match, each on target. She notched two assists and found the back of the net once in the 58th minute. She leads the team in shots so far this season, with 39 (26). She is now tied with Chelsie Charles for the second most amount of goals this season with three, following behind freshman Czaske Deane.
The first half saw an even match up, with each team recording seven shots, with four on target, but remaining scoreless at the break. In the second half, the Bulldogs picked up the pace and scored three times in 10 minutes. Deane was the first to find the back of the net in the 53rd minute, unassisted. A little over a minute later, freshman Anita Frederick-Sigaran found Moriah Watkins just outside of the box, where she sent the ball to the bottom left corner of the net to put the Bulldogs up two. Four minutes later, Perez-Acosta received the ball from Deane and fellow senior Daniela Marroquin to give the Maroon and White a comfortable 3-0 lead.
The Delta Devils tallied three shots on goal before finally adding their lone goal to the point column, courtesy of a penalty kick from Liana Bryant in the 69th minute. Undeterred, Perez-Acosta found Charles, who took advantage of a misplaced goalkeeper and sent the ball to the lower center of the net for the fourth AAMU goal. Two minutes later, in the 73d minute, Perez-Acosta notched her second assist when she found freshman Meghane St-Cyr who sent the ball high left into the net to solidify the 5-1 outcome.
AAMU will finish its regular season on the road, with the next matchup in Houston against Texas Southern University on Friday.
Senior Celebration
Before the match, six seniors were honored as part of the Senior Day Celebration:
Morgan Burnap- transferred to Alabama A&M from Big West Conference institution Cal State Bakersfield. This season, the Stafford, New Hampshire native has appeared in 12 games and started in three. Burnap recorded a shot on goal in the SWAC Home victory against UAPB.
Sarah De Gannes- transferred to AAMU from Western Illinois. The Edmonton, Alberta, Canada native has played in and started in 10 matches this season, tallying nine shots with 5 on goal.
India.Irie Gaiten- Gaiten joined the Bulldog Soccer program from Motlow State Community College last season. The Clarksville, Tennessee native played in 10 matches this season and recorded a shot on goal in the SWAC Home victory against UAPB.
Madalynn Tanksley- The Austin, Texas native has tallied 24 saved goals in her time at AAMU.
Daniela Marroquin- The Spring, Texas native played in 13 matches this season and started in 11 and recorded a shot on goal in the match against Stetson.
Jasmine Perez-Acosta- The Cape Coral, Florida native has played in and started all 14 matches this season. She leads the team in shots with 39 including 26 on goal. This season, she recorded a goal in the home victory match against West Georgia, and at Charleston southern and tallied an assist in the home SWAC victory against UAPB.
