THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University football team will look to get back into the win column as the Bulldogs welcome Southern to Louis Crews Stadium during Senior Day and Heroes Appreciation Day on Saturday in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game. Kickoff against the Jaguars is set for 2 p.m.
Â
Alabama A&M (3-4 overall, 1-2 SWAC) suffered a setback last weekend in the annual rivalry game, the 83
rd annual McDonald's Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola, to Alabama State, 27-19, at Legion Field. The Bulldogs struggled out of the gate and trailed 27-3 before putting together back-to-back touchdowns, closing the gap to 27-19. However, turnovers plagued Alabama A&M throughout the day, turning it over four times, the final sealed the game for Alabama State.
Â
Southern (4-4, 3-1) also enters Saturday's game off a loss as the Jaguars fell on the road to Florida A&M, 24-6. The Jaguars struggled to get anything going offensively as FAMU held Southern to just 205 total yards, with 122 of those coming on the ground. The Jaguars currently are in a tight race for the SWAC West Division, holding the tiebreaker over Alcorn State.
Â
The game will be aired on HBCU GO as Charlie Neal (play-by-play), Jon Kelley (analyst) and Nicole Hutchinson (sideline) will have the call. In addition, fans can tune into WJAB 90.9 FM as Maurice Brooks (play-by-play) and Reggie Benson (analyst) will call all the action.

Alabama A&M head coach
Connell Maynor said the team must eliminate mistakes, especially in turning the ball over.
Â
"We've got to take care of the football," Maynor said. "Last week we gave them 13 points off turnovers and we lost by eight, so we can't afford to do that this week. We can't give them any points off turnovers, where bad field position leads to a short field and points for those guys. Defensively, we've got to get some turnovers. We've got to cause some turnovers. The defense has been playing good, we're just not turning the ball over. We need to create some turnovers and create a spark."
Â
Maynor also said it speaks volumes about how the team plays inside Louis Crews Stadium, a place where the Bulldogs rarely lose.
Â
"I knew we had a good home record," Maynor said. "I was asking the team when was the last time we lost at home and it was Florida A&M last season. It feels good to be back at home and I told the guys you've got to defend your home. We have been 10-2 at home over these past two-plus seasons and we want to continue that trend this weekend against Southern."
Â
LAST MEETING
In the 2023 meeting, Southern grabbed the lead in the first quarter and didn't relinquish it as a late field goal sealed the Jaguars win at A.W. Munford Stadium.
Â
The Jaguars took the opening kickoff, going 68 yards in seven plays to grab a 7-0 lead, which stood until 5:26 remaining in the second when
Victor Barbosa booted a field goal to trim the deficit to 7-3. However, Southern answered right before the half and took a 10-3 advantage into the break.
Â
The Jaguars pushed the margin to 17-3 after a Gary Quarles 9-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, but a
Quincy Casey 1-yard run closed the gap to 17-10.
Â
Southern tacked on a field goal with just under two minutes to play, giving the Jaguars the 20-10 victory.
