Balanced Bulldog Effort Sweeps Alcorn

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M women's volleyball team saw a balanced effort on both sides of the ball to sweep the Alcorn State Braves 3-0 on Friday night in T.M. Elmore Gymnasium. Senior Fatima Ramirez paced the Bulldogs with nine kills, 11 digs, and two service aces.  


 

Senior Saldy Amparo-Smith notched nine terminations of her own, while Mackenzie Jarvis picked up four service aces on the night. Grace Tapscott recorded 15 assists and Laela Price tallied 10. Kennedy Robinson dug 11 balls on the night to help pace the back row defense.  


 

Alcorn State was paced by Demya Tate's 12 kills, who was one of two Braves to hit a positive percentage, hitting .286 percent. Brooklyn Shook added 13 assists and 13 digs for the Braves, leading the team in both categories.  


 

AAMU hit at .225 percent on the night and held Alcorn to a .000 percent hitting average. The Braves recorded no service aces, compared to the seven aces from the Bulldogs. Though the first set saw nine ties and five lead changes, the Braves never saw the lead in either the second or third sets. AAMU balloons the all-time series with Alcorn to 33-1. 


 

Prior to first serve, the Bulldogs recognized Amparo-Smith for reaching 1000 career kills, and Michell Jerez for digging 1500 balls in her career.  


 

Set One  

The Braves jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead to prompt a Bulldog timeout. Alabama A&M claimed three consecutive points to take the lead at 11-10. The score tied three more times before the Bulldogs took the lead at 17-14 to force Alcorn into a stoppage. A monster block from Amparo-Smith and Saniya Spalding put AAMU within two of the set, and a cross-court kill from Spalding took AAMU to set point. The Braves battled through the first set point, but another kill from Amparo-Smith solidified the frame 25-22 in favor of the host team. 
 

Set Two  

AAMU opened the set with a kill from Ramirez and a cross-court kill from shaw put the bulldogs up three. Alcorn State battled back before Shaw terminated another to the center of the court to surpass the Braves by one point at 10-9. Spalding sent a ball to the center back of the court to reinforce a three-point lead, but a pair of errors caused the Bulldogs to request a timeout. After the stoppage, Alabama A&M went on a 7-0 run to force a break in play from Alcorn State. The Braves earned another point, but three consecutive errors gave Alabama A&M the set, 25-15 
 

Set Three 

 The Bulldogs jetted to a massive 13-5 lead before Alcorn called a stoppage. Jarvis tallied a pair of service aces to go up 18-5 and a cheeky kill from Ramirez put the AAMU within three of the set. Ramirez finished the match with a block to solidify stanza 25-8.  
 

The Bulldogs return to the court on Sunday, November 17th for Senior Day. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. with the senior celebration to begin directly before.
