Soccer Concludes Season in SWAC Tournament Semifinals

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | The Alabama A&M women's soccer team (7-11-1, 4-3-1 SWAC) concluded their season after falling 2-1 to Texas Southern in the semifinal round of the 2024 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament.  

 

Senior India.Irie Gaiten was the lone Bulldog scorer, recording her first goal of the season.  

 

AAMU came out with high intensity, when in the seventh minute of the match, Carolina Guiterrez took a corner kick in which the ball found Gaiten on the inside of the box, who sent it to the top right corner of the net to break open the match.  


 

Neither team recorded a shot in 10 minutes. Sophomore Liliana Ribeiro nabbed her first save of the night in the 17th minute as TSU's Alyssa Taylor sent one towards the bottom of net. The Tigers finally saw success when Melissa Knuston found Victoria Pucci who sent the ball to the left side of the net to level the match in the 26th minute. Texas Southern tallied the match-deciding goal in the 34th minute when Kourtney Celaya used her right foot to find the bottom right of the net to take the 2-1 lead.  


 

Both teams logged two more shots but were unable to convert to by the break. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to just two shots in the entire second period, with both saved by senior goalkeeper Madalynn Tanksley. AAMU doubled the shots TSU took in the second half but were unable to see one cross the goal line.  


 

The Maroon and White end the season after four Bulldogs earned SWAC Weekly Awards (Anita Frederick-Sigaran, Meghane St-Cyr, Liliana Ribeiro, Jasmine Perez-Acosta). Four Bulldogs also earned postseason awards, as Czaske Deane was selected as the SWAC Freshman of the year, while Perez-Acosta was named SWAC Midfielder of the Year. Deane, Ribeiro and Frederick-Sigaran were selected to the All-SWAC Second Team, while Perez-Acosta received a First Team birth.  
 

SEASON NOTES 

  • Perez-Acosta led the Bulldogs with 17 points after seven goals and three assists. 
  • Deane and Chelsie Charles each account for nine points after four goals and an assist a piece.  
  • Seven Bulldogs added at least one goal on the season 
  • Frederick-Sigaran tied with Perez-Acosta for most assists.  
  • Perez-Acosta, Victoria Mealing, Moriah Watkins and St-Cyr played and started in all 19 matches this season.  
  • Ribeiro completed her sophomore season with 91 saves.  
  • The Bullsogs totaled 23 goals this season from 200(116) shots
  • The Maroon and White received no Red Cards
  • The most points, goals, and assists were scored against Mississippi Valley State (15 points from five goals and five assists)
  • The most shots (on goal) were taken against the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff with 33(21)
  • The most saves (15) were recorded against Lipscomb
