Bulldogs Continue Undefeated Road Swing after Topping Lions

ST. CHARLES, Mo. | Jaiyah Harris-Smith earned her 300th career assist as the Bulldogs topped the Lindenwood Lions 61-58 on Saturday afternoon. AAMU remains undefeated on the road and gave the Lions their first loss on their home court.  

 

Alisha Wilson earned her second double-double of the season after scoring 11 points and 13 rebounds, the most boards of either team. Mailyn Wilkerson added 11 points of her own, going 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. Wilson and Harris-Smith each picked up three steals, while Harris-Smith recorded a game-high seven assists to earn her 305th career assist.  
 

Lindenwood was led by Ellie Brueggemann's 10 points. Brooke Coffey, Gracie Kelsey and Mykayla Cunningham all added nine points, while Kelsey paced the Lions defense with nine boards. Cunningham added a team-high four assists and two steals.  
 

The Bulldogs improve to 5-3 on the season while LU drops to 4-4. AAMU is now 7-8 agaisnt Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) opponents and Lindenwood picks up its first loss against a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) team.  

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Lindenwood opened the contest with a shot behind the arc from Wernli and jumped to a quick 7-2 lead.  
  • AAMU went on a 5-1 run to come within one point of the Lions going into the first media timeout, courtesy of a three-point play from Pendleton 
  • LU stretched their lead to as many as six, but a pair of Bulldog layups got Alabama A&M within two of the Lions, before a Stewart layup placed the lions ahead four at the conclusion of the first frame (19-15) 
  • Rittenberry opened the second quarter with a steal and layup, and followed it with another driving layup to tie the game at 19 all 
  • AAMU took their first lead of the contest at 22-10, but a pair of free throws from Cunningham and a quick release three from Brueggemann gave the Lions control at 25-22. 
  • A jumper from Wilson got the Bulldogs within one point of LU heading into the media timeout with just under five minutes remaining in the half (25-24) 
  • Walker made the first three pointer for the Bulldogs to go up 27-25 and seemingly sparked the Bulldog offense as Tia Harvey, Mailyn Wilkerson and Shelomi Sanders hit back-to-back three's 
  • A pair of Lion free throws sent the teams into the break tied at 35 all  
  • Lindenwood controlled the first half of the third frame, going on an 6-0 run into the media stoppage 
  • The Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run out of the commercial break to tie the match at 41 all 
  • Wilkerson sunk two consecutive three-pointers to give AAMU its biggest lead of the contest at 50-45 
  • Kelsey sunk a jumper, but AAMU ended the stanza ahead 50-47 
  • A three-point from Bueggemann tied the contest at 52-52 with just under eight minutes remaining 
  • AAMU scored five unanswered points to go up 57-52 
  • Lindenwood battled back within three, but a pair of free throws from Wilkerson put the Bulldogs ahead four points with 12.8 seconds remaining in regulation (59-55) 
  • Aalayah Wilson hit a buzzer beating three-pointer, but it was not enough, as AAMU claimed the contest 61-58 

GAME NOTES  

  • Alabama A&M shot 41.2 percent (21-of-51) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from behind the arc 
  • AAMU went 14-24 (58.3 percent) from the line 
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 37 total rebounds, 24 of them defensively  
  • Alisha Wilson earned her second double-double of the season after scoring 11 points, 13 rebounds and three steals 
  • Mailyn Wilkerson added 11, went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc and sunk both of her free throws

  • Ellie Brueggemann's paced the Lions offense with 10 points.  
  • Brooke Coffey, Gracie Kelsey and Mykayla Cunningham all added nine points 
  • Kelsey paced the Lions defense with nine boards 
  • Cunningham added a team-high four assists and two steals. 
  • Lindenwood saw 30 points in the paint, picked up 19 bench points and only 10 points from 20 Bulldog turnovers
