Bulldogs Complete Season Sweep of MVSU

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Four players reach double figures in scoring as the Alabama A&M University men's basketball team won its fourth game in five tries and completed a season sweep of Mississippi Valley State in an 80-57 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory on Saturday afternoon at the AAMU Event Center.
 
Alabama A&M (7-18 overall, 6-6 SWAC) shot 49 percent from the floor and used a dominating second half to pull away for the lopsided win.
 
Lorenzo Downey paced AAMU with 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block. Chad Moodie came off the bench to provide 12 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, with four boards, one assists, one steal and one block. Omari Peek and Jayland Randall each added 10 points.
 
Rayquan Brown led Mississippi Valley State (0-25, 0-12) with a game-high 38 points, including 13 coming from the foul line.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team had a lead bigger than three points in the opening half as Alabama A&M took a 31-28 advantage into the break
  • Alabama A&M began the second half strong, using a 16-2 run over the first five minutes, to grab a 47-30 lead after a Cameron Tucker three-point play with 15:11 remaining
  • The Delta Devils trimmed the margin to 47-36 after a free throw by Brown with just over 13 minutes left
  • A dunk by Moodie and free throws by Peek gave the Bulldogs a 69-50 lead with 4:23 remaining
  • MVSU never got any closer than 17 points down the stretch as AAMU won its fourth game in five outings 
GAME NOTES
  • Alabama A&M shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) from the field and 86.2 percent (25-of-29) from the free-throw line
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 34 rebounds, with 24 coming off the defensive glass
  • Lorenzo Downey registered 13 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one block
  • Chad Moodie came off the bench to provide 12 points, on 5-of-6 shooting, with four boards, one assists, one steal and one block
