HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | More than 170 Alabama A&M University students are registered members of the AAMU Gaming Club and is now seeking new members.
The Gaming Club, also known as Esports, is seeking expansion as President
Allan Johnson says, the club is a space for people with similar interests to connect and share experiences in a new way.
"It's open to everyone," he says. "We have a variety of students, from people who aren't involved in athletics, to people who often don't get the chance to meet others on campus."
Originally named the AAMU Fighting Game Club (FGC) during the rise of Esports in 2018, AAMU students competed in multiple games like Madden, Rocket League, and 2K. Out of that club came the
Bulldog Esports Team.
"We're under AAMU Athletics and have seven members. We've had tournaments in partnership with HBCU Esports Leagues, whose sponsors include Cxmmunity, Sony, Mountain Dew, and more."
The team has many accomplishments, including winning first place and $1,000 in the
Alabama A&M University Minecraft Build for the World Games Birmingham 2022 HBCU Minecraft Challenge, where club members reimagined the Alabama A&M University campus in the world of Minecraft.
"This is one of our proudest accomplishments and we love to see it highlighted," says Johnson.

Jaeveon Jordan recently won the
Qualifier Tournament #2 in the NFL's fourth annual EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL x HBCU Tournament.
Eric Anderson (Erosu) placed 7th in a double elimination 64-player 1v1 Mortal Kombat 1 tournament in the 2023 MTN DEW Real Change Challenge, taking home $32,958. The team also competed in the biggest HBCU Call of Duty Tournament at the MTN DEW Real Change Challenge last year, making it to the regional finals and placing in the top 8, and winning $8,750 in scholarships. Players included

"We're looking for students to compete particularly for the Esports team when we compete against other HBCUs," says Johnson. "We are also looking to get students involved in the gaming club as a
Registered Student Organization," says Johnson.
Johnson says competing students can win scholarship money as prizes, but hopes athletic scholarships become an option in the future. For now, he wants to see the AAMU Gaming Club continue to grow.
"It's for any student with an interest in gaming," he says. "There are plans to start membership dues to cover expenses for games or consoles, but right now, it's free to join. Students just have to register. It's an easy way to make friends and just have fun!"
