HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama A&M University women's soccer team (2-8 overall, 0-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) fell to the Grambling State University Tigers (3-6-3, 1-0) on Friday after an early second-half Tiger goal proved to be the difference at Merrimack Park.
Competition started out just as gusty as the wind, with both teams battling to be the first to find the back of the net. Grambling State was the first to get a look, but Bulldog keeper Liliana Ribeiro saved the attempt it to keep the score blank 15 minutes in. GSU found the back of the net twice, but both times the goal was disallowed due to a player in an offside position.
In the 44th minute, graduate transfer Sarah De Gannes sent the ball down the field toward the bottom center of the net where Tiger goalkeeper Madison Covey-Taylor was able to save, keeping the match scoreless going into the half.
In the 49th minute, freshman Alicia Cohen got the best look of match for the Bulldogs. She broke past the GSU defense and fired a shot toward goal that bounced right off the left post and back to Covey-Taylor.
Less than 10 minutes later, Grambling State freshman Alana Aiken found junior Jayla Gage, who sent the ball to the back of the net to break the 0-0 tie. As official play neared the finish, Cohen took one more on-target shot but Covey-Taylor was there to make the save.
The Bulldogs still lead 13-12 in the all-time series against the Tigers.
