THE HILL | In the Bulldogs' second shutout of the season, the Alabama A&M University soccer team (3-8, 1-1 SWAC) claimed its first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory after defeating the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff (1-7-1, 0-2 SWAC) 2-0 at the Bulldog Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
AAMU notched over 20 on-target shots during the competition and only allowed two shots on goal for the Golden Lions. In her first start of the season, sophomore goalkeeper Yesenia Aiken saved two UAPB balls to solidify the match's blank sheet. Senior Jasmine Perez-Acosta led the team in shots with nine, including six on target. Freshman Alicia Cohen trailed just shortly behind, tallying seven attempts with four on goal.
UAPB's Ashley McGuire was the only Golden Lion to tally on-target shots during the match.
Just three minutes into the first half, Perez-Acosta recorded her first shot of the afternoon after sending a ball to the bottom right corner of the net, where UAPB keeper Makaila Riedel saved it. AAMU tabbed four more shots before Perez-Acosta found freshman Czaske Deane who sent the ball to the center top of the net in the 14th minute to open the scoring.
The Bulldogs used this momentum to notch four more on-target shots before UAPB got its second look at the goal from McGuire in the 26th minute. The Bulldogs recorded five more shots before the period ended, claiming the lead at halftime 1-0.
The second half started much like the first, with Perez-Acosta sending the ball to the goal twice, both saved by the Golden Lions. In the 57th minute, however, the Bulldogs saw the ball hit the top left corner of the net, courtesy of junior Chelsie Charles. Emily Chavez, Perez-Acosta and Cohen added five more notches to the shots category before the match ended.
Deane and Charles now join Perez-Acosta with most goals of the season, with a pair a piece. Perez-Acosta leads the team in points and shots on goal, with five and 19 respectively. The Bulldogs improve to 11-6-1 in the all-time series with the Golden Lions.
AAMU now prepares for its first conference road swing, taking on Jackson State University on Friday and Southern University on Sunday.
