THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's basketball team led by 26 points at the half and cruised to the 77-55 victory over Miles College on Sunday at the AAMU Event Center.
Alabama A&M (3-6) have won back-to-back games for the first time this season and held Miles without a field goal during a 10-minute stretch in between the first and second quarters to pull away for the big lead. Miles (6-1) shot nearly 21 percent from the floor in the first half and turned the ball over 13 times, resulting in 18 AAMU points.
Kalia Walker scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half, including 11-for-11 at the foul line, with four steals, three assists and one rebound.
Aniya Palmer added 10 points, on 5-of-7 shooting, with five boards and two blocks. Kayln Ervin tossed in 10 points, two steals and one assist.
Mya Miller led Miles with 10 points and two boards. Makayla Rieves chipped in nine points, four boards, two steals and one blocked shot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Alabama A&M jumped out to a 13-6 advantage after free throws by
Kamiyha Griffin with 3:54 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Bulldogs held the Golden Bears without a field goal over the final six minutes of the first period and took a 16-8 advantage into the second quarter.
Alabama A&M's defense continued to stifle Miles as the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 28-8, before a Jamaica Young bucket snapped a more than 10-minute scoring drought for the Golden Bears as AAMU led, 28-10, with 4:28 remaining.
The Bulldogs continued to push the lead and used a 13-4 run, capped by a Kayln Ervin trey to extend the advantage to 41-14 with 1:16 remaining.
Alabama A&M cruised into the half, taking a commanding 45-19 lead into the break.
Walker took over in the third period, scoring 12 points as the Bulldogs led 68-41 to enter the final quarter.
The deficit was too large to overcome for Miles as Alabama A&M picked up its second consecutive home victory and third overall this season.
