ATLANTA, Ga. | The Alabama A&M University men's basketball team begins the 2025 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Men's Basketball Tournament with a familiar foe in facing Grambling State in the opening round on Tuesday.
Tip-off against the Tigers is scheduled for 1 p.m. (central time) from the Gateway Center and streamed on ESPN+ as Santoria Black (play-by-play), Tolly Carr (analyst) and Brooke Kirchhofer (sideline) will call the action.
Alabama A&M and Grambling State are no strangers to each other, having met twice this season, including the last coming less than a week ago when the Tigers rolled to a 67-51 victory on March 6 in Grambling, La.
The winner of the opening-round tournament game will meet top seed and SWAC regular season champion Southern on Wednesday at 1 p.m. (central time).
Alabama A&M (10-21), the ninth seed in the tournament, have dropped its last three games and four out of the last five contests. Grambling State (10-21), the 2024 SWAC Men's Basketball Tournament champions, have also lost four out of its last five games and enter the 2025 tourney as the eighth seed.
The Tigers are 7-3 against the Bulldogs in the last 10 meetings and have won three straight in the series.
In the last matchup, Grambling State led 35-19 at the half after shooting 52.0 percent from the floor as the Tigers held the Bulldogs to just six field goals in the opening period.
Dylan Mclean and
Saliou Seye paced AAMU with 10 points each, while
AC Bryant and
Chad Moodie tossed in eight points apiece. Meanwhile, James Flippin and Kintavious Dozier recorded 18 and 11 points, respectively to lead GSU.
Alabama A&M is averaging 73.6 points per game and shooting nearly 41.0 percent from the field.
The Bulldogs rank fifth nationally in turnovers forced per game, seventh offensive rebounds per game and 12
th in bench points.
Bryant paces the Bulldog offense at 14.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game, while Moodie is averaging 11.1 points, 5.9 boards, 1.9 blocks and 1.4 assists per contest.
Grambling State is averaging nearly 67.0 points per game and is shooting 43.3 percent from the floor.
Dozier leads three Tiger players in double figures at 12.1 points, 3.6 boards, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steals, while Antwan Burnet is averaging 10.6 points, 5.5 boards, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals. Mikale Stevenson is posting 10.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.8 steals.
