AAMU Falls At Grambling

THE HILL | The Alabama A&M women's basketball team (20-9, 13-4 SWAC) dropped a 77-65 decision to the Grambling State Tigers on Thursday night. Though the Bulldogs struggled on both sides of the ball, two athletes wearing Maroon and White finished in double figures.

Lauryn Pendleton tied her season high after picking up 18 points, including the only two three-pointers the Bulldogs scored. Alisha Wilson added 12 points to the Bulldog tally, and Aniya Palmer paced the AAMU defense, grabbing eight rebounds. Jaiyah Harris-Smith orchestrated the Bulldogs, recording six assists and five steals.

Grambling State saw three finish in double figures, led by Kahia Warmsley's 22 points. Lydia Freeman picked up a 12 points and 12 rebounds double-double while Douthsine Prien added 11 points and seven assists.  

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • Pendleton opened the contest with an uncontested triple, but Warmsley responded with the same, leveling the frame early.  
  • Wilson added a jumper to take a four-point lead (9-5) into the first media break; the teams traded points until three consecutive Bulldog points gave AAMU control at the conclusion of the first quarter, 18-15.  
  • A shot from LaCambria Shakespeare in the paint tied the game at 22 all, but GSU went on a seven-point run before neutralized.  
  • A pair of free throws from Walker brought the Bulldogs within two 
  • Grambling took a six-point lead twice more, but four points from Wilson and a made foul shot from Pendleton sent the teams to the half with the host team ahead by just one (37-36) 
  • The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 17-4 right out of the break prompting an AAMU stoppage.  
  • AAMU scored six unanswered points, but GSU ended the third stanza in front by 14 (62-48) 
  • Both the Bulldogs and the Tigers scored 15 points in the final frame, but the Tigers ultimately claimed the contest, 77, 65 

GAME NOTES  

  • Alabama A&M shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field and 11.1% percent (2-of-18) from behind the arc  
  • AAMU went 19-36 (52.8) percent) from the line  
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 28 total rebounds, 15 of them defensively  
  • Lauryn Pendleton tied her season high after picking up 18 points 
  • Alisha Wilson added 12 points to the Bulldog tally 
  • Aniya Palmer grabbed eight rebounds and Jaiyah Harris-Smith recorded six assists and five steals. 
  • The Bulldogs finished with 30 points in the paint, 16 bench points, and 33 points from 26 Tiger turnovers   
  • Grambling State shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the field, 66.7 percent from the line (12-18), and 31.1 percent (5-16) from behind the arc  
  • GSU grabbed 43 rebounds  
  • Grambling State was paced by Kahia Warmsley's 22 points.  
  • Lydia Freeman picked up a 12 points and 12 rebounds double-double  
  • Douthsine Prien added 11 points and seven assists. 
  •  The Tigers saw 48 points in the paint, 19 bench points, and 13 points from 26 Bulldog turnovers
