Four Pace Alabama A&M to Sixth Straight Victory

HOUSTON, Texas | Four Alabama A&M University women's basketball players posted double figures as the Bulldogs ran their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) winning streak to six straight games with a 81-63 victory over Texas Southern on Saturday afternoon from the H&PE Arena.
 
Kalia Walker scored 13 of her game-high 19 points in the second half and added five rebounds and three assists to lead the Bulldogs. Coriah Beck registered 11 of her 15 points in the opening half and grabbed a team-high eight boards and one block. Rakiyah Beal posted 13 points, two boards and one blocked shot, while Moses Davenport chipped in 13 points, five boards, one steal and one block. 
 
Daeja Holmes and Ayanna Jackson each posted 12 points to pace Texas Southern. Aaliyah Henderson added 11 points and five boards.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the Lady Tigers 30-21 in the fourth quarter, shooting over 70 percent from the floor in the final 10 minutes to turn a competitive contest into a convincing conference win.
 
Alabama A&M (10-9 overall, 6-1 SWAC) opened the game trading baskets with Texas Southern before using second-chance opportunities and defensive pressure to take a 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. A second-chance three-pointer from Beck sparked the Bulldogs early, while Aniya Palmer and Jaida Belton provided key minutes off the bench.
 
The Bulldogs extended the lead in the second quarter behind strong interior play and timely perimeter shooting. Walker attacked the rim to keep the offense flowing, while Beck connected from long range late in the period to give Alabama A&M a 31-24 advantage at halftime.
 
Texas Southern (8-12, 4-4) made a push to open the third quarter, cutting the deficit to five behind back-to-back three-pointers. However, Alabama A&M answered with as Davenport scored on a second-chance layup and Walker finished in transition to steady the Bulldogs. A late basket-and-one from Beal helped AAMU carry a 51-42 lead into the final period.
 
Alabama A&M seized control early in the fourth quarter, opening the frame on a 10-2 run. Walker continued to score inside, Beck added a pull-up jumper, and the Bulldogs capitalized on turnovers to stretch the lead to double digits. Alabama A&M maintained its defensive intensity down the stretch and closed the game at the free-throw line to secure the win.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama A&M returns home for a pair of games, starting on Thursday when the Bulldogs play host to Bethune-Cookman. Tip-off against the Wildcats is scheduled for 6 p.m. from the AAMU Event Center and streamed on SWAC TV.
