LOUISVILLE, Ky. | The Alabama A&M University women's cross country team captured its third team championship of the season Saturday, placing five runners in the top 10 to win the Silver Division race at the Louisville Classic.
Laura Avila claimed the individual title, completing the 5-kilometer course in 18:20.2 as the Bulldogs totaled 27 points to lead the 25-team scoring field. Bellarmine finished second with 85 points, followed by Vincennes with 89.
The victory marked Alabama A&M's third consecutive team title, following championships at the Legacy Series Invite and Southern Showcase.
Avila edged Bellarmine's Kynzlei Bassett by 4.8 seconds to lead a dominant performance by the Maroon & White.
Sanyae Gibson finished third in 18:32.2, while
Minka Isom placed fifth in 18:46.8.
Freshman
Iyndia Bey crossed the finish line eighth in 19:02.5, and Alitza Dennard rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring group with a 10th-place finish in 19:15.2.
Alabama A&M's five scorers finished within 55 seconds of one another, producing an average time of 18:47.38 and a 58-point victory over Bellarmine.
Kayla Fluker finished 84th in 21:43.5, while
Leila Sollas placed 92nd in 21:54.2.
Alabama A&M concludes the season on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Fla.
