THE HILL | The Alabama A&M University women's soccer team secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over Alabama State on Sunday afternoon at the AAMU Soccer Field, with Albany Rios scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute.
After a scoreless opening half, the Bulldogs continued to apply pressure offensively throughout the second period. Alabama A&M recorded 15 shots in the second half and eight corner kicks overall while maintaining 55 percent possession throughout the match.
The Bulldogs' persistence finally paid off in the 89th minute when Rios found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The unassisted strike gave Alabama A&M the 1-0 advantage with just 52 seconds remaining in regulation.
Alabama A&M finished the afternoon with an 18-5 advantage in shots, including a 3-1 edge in shots on goal. The Bulldogs also held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Adriana Durango anchored the defensive effort, making one save while recording her second win of the season. The Bulldogs held Alabama State scoreless for the full 90 minutes.
With the victory, Alabama A&M improved to 3-4-3 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play, while Alabama State fell to 0-8-2 and 0-1-1.
