BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama A&M University running back
Troy Bruce was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Football Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Bruce earned the honor after powering Alabama A&M to a 38-23 victory over Miles College in the 16th annual Louis Crews Classic on Saturday at Louis Crews Stadium.
The senior from Center Point, Alabama, rushed for a game-high 145 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. He averaged 13.2 yards per attempt as the Bulldogs accumulated 279 rushing yards and 471 yards of total offense.
Bruce opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run during the first quarter. He added a 2-yard score late in the third quarter to extend Alabama A&M's lead to 38-14. His performance helped the Bulldogs improve to 1-1 and secure their first victory of the season.
Jackson State's Jared Lockhart was chosen the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week, while Prairie View A&M's Malachi Williams earned Defensive Player of the Week honors. PVAMU's Jahbari Kuykendall received the SWAC's Special Teams Player of the Week accolade.
Alabama A&M returns to action Saturday against Tennessee State in The Legacy Series. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Louis Crews Stadium.
