Johnnie Williams

A native of Marion, Indiana, Williams joined Alabama A&M in August 2021 and brings 11 years of coaching experience, nine at the collegiate level, to “The Hill”.
 
Texas Southern University (2018-21, Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach)
During his time with TSU he served as the director of operations for the men’s basketball program in 2018-19 and as an assistant coach from 2019-21.
 
Williams was instrumental in the Tigers’ success as the team reached the 2019 College Insider Tournament (CIT) semifinals and won the 2021 SWAC Tournament.
 
During the latter season they qualified for the NCAA Tournament and won a First Four game against Mount St. Mary’s before falling to Big Ten and Power 5 member Michigan.
 
While in Houston he helped develop three All-Conference members, two Newcomer of the Year honorees and Tournament MVP Michael Weathers. Williams was also instrumental in producing two All-Tournament athletes, three Athlete of the Week honorees and Jeremy Combs being named SWAC Player of the Year.
 
Illinois Central Community College (2015-17, Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach)
Prior to his success at TSU he served as assistant coach and spent a pair of seasons with Illinois Central Community College from 2015-17. During that time the Cougars had two members earn First Team All-Mid-West Athletic Conference (MAC) honors and three players named to the All-Region XXIV Team. 
 
Tennessee State University (2014-15, Men’s Basketball Video Coordinator)
In his time in Nashville he spent one year as a video coordinator for the Tigers men’s basketball team serving under Dana Ford during the 2014-15 season.   

Grambling (2013-14, Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach)
Williams got his start in the SWAC at Grambling as an assistant coach and while there he helped develop a SWAC First-Team All-Conference selection in Antwan Scott as well as three league Player of the Week honorees.
 
Benedictine University at Springfield (2012-13, Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach)
He would begin his collegiate career with NAIA Division I Benedict University serving as an assistant coach. There he helped produced an All-Conference Honorable Mention and a pair of Academic All-Conference Players.
 
Wentzville Holt High School(2011-12, Men’s Basketball Head Coach)
William’s first head coaching job came at Wentzville Holt High School in Wentzville, Missouri where he led his team to runner-up finishes in the Gateway South Conference and District 6 Tournament. Additionally he produced two athletic Gateway All-American performers during the 2011-12 season.

Collegiate Playing Career: Creighton University (1990-91), Morehead State (1991-94)
As a student-athlete Williams signed with Creighton University after graduating from Marion High School in 1990. During his time there the Blue Jays won the 1991 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament and went on to advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. He would then transfer to Morehead State and go on to earn All-Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) honors, finishing with 1,083 points, and 378 rebounds and 222 assists.
 
Education
Williams earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from Morehead State in 1995.
 
Personal
A resident of the Greater Huntsville area, Williams resides with his wife Adrea and the couple have two daughters, Jazmyn and Olivia, and a son, Johnnie III.
