For the second time this season, Alabama A&M gave an SEC team all it could handle on the road, but the Bulldogs fell Wednesday night 78-55 at Vanderbilt. Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs dropped a 64-56 decision against Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Alabama A&M kept the game within reach for much of the night minus a late surge by the host Commodores in each half. Trant Simpson led the Bulldogs with 18 points, and Casey Cantey added 10.
Vanderbilt opened the game with a 7-0 run, but the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game by slowing the pace and forcing the tempo. Alabama A&M cut the lead to 23-21 before the Commodores pulled away with an 18-5 run to close the first half. Vanderbilt led 41-26 at the intermission.
Highlights on the final box score for the Bulldogs included 14 offensive rebounds and limiting Vandy to just six offensive boards. The Bulldogs continued their strong effort from the free throw line going 10-12 for the game.
Cantey added eight rebounds to go with his 10 points, and Cornelius Hester and Jonathan Belt each added eight points.
The Bulldogs shot 32 percent from the floor and forced 16 turnovers for the night. The Commodores held a 34-30 rebound advantage.
