Bulldogs Hold Off Southern, 60-57, For Second Straight Win

Trant Simpson recorded 15 points, six assists, five rebounds, six assists, and five steals as the Alabama A&M men's basketball team held off the Jaguars of Southern University for its second straight conference victory at Elmore Gymnasium. Simpson, who was fresh off his first career triple double against Alcorn on Sat., is just six shy of 1,000 points for his career. The Bulldogs swept the weekend and will travel to Houston, Tex. to face Texas Southern on Sat. Jan. 31 beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Southern took the lead at the 14:20 mark of the second half off a pair of free throws by Julius Ingram. The visiting Jaguars kept the advantage over the proceeding 12 plus minutes until a Simpson basket tied the score at 57-57 with 1:35 left in regulation. John Smith's tip-in at :59 gave the Bulldogs a slim two point margin. Simpson's free throw with 23 seconds reamining ended scoring for the half as Southern was unable to connect on a three point attempt within the last 10 seconds of play.

Cornelius Hester and Casey Cantey scored nine points each. Hester also dished out six assists. Jonathan Inman and Jonathan Belt chipped in with eight points apiece. Inman was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and also pulled down a team-high six off the glass.

For Southern, Chris Davis had a game-best 16 points and six boards. Julius Ingram was 6-of-12 from the field for 13 points on the night. Barry Honore' recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Steffon Wiley chipped in with nine points, four boards, and six assists.

In the first half, SU jumped out to a 4-0 advantage. A fast break layup by Simpson put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard at the 18:21 mark. A trey by Hester at 16:09 gave A&M its first lead of the game at 7-6. The Bulldogs went into intermission with a slim 34-32 margin.

Hester scored all of his nine points in the first 20 - going 3-for-7 from the floor, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Belt's 4-for-6 effort from the field (eight points) was second-best on the team at the half.

For the game, A&M shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55) and scored 25 points off 20 Jaguar miscues. Southern held a 42-30 advantage on the boards, however.

A&M will be on the road for its next two games when it travels to play Texas Southern on Sat. Jan. 31 and then Prairie View on Mon. Feb. 2. The game against Texas Southern is slated for 7:30 p.m.
