Men's Tennis Notches First Win in Home Opener

Bulldogs defeat Tigers 4-3

Alabama A&M opened its home season with its first win in nine matches with a 4-3 victory Sunday over Tennessee State.

TSU, playing its first match of the year, traveled with only five players, giving up #3 doubles and #6 singles. Needing a win at either #1 or #2 doubles to get the point, the Bulldogs went to work to do just that. The #2 team of Johnnie Singleton and Stevon Walker came through with an 8-3 win to give the team a 2-0 lead.

Bertaud Ngomsi, ahead 5-0 in the first set, got another point for the Bulldogs when his opponent retired, leaving the men’s team one point shy of their first win.

That point came as freshman Evan Brown got a straight set win after a long, hard fought second set.

“The conditions were tough today,” commented coach Thomas Colvin. “We played in the same wind that they did so I can’t say that we had an advantage. We are glad to get a ‘W’ and with WKU coming in, we will get ready to move forward quickly.”

The Bulldogs host Western Kentucky on Tuesday, March 10, at 11 a.m., at Huntsville Tennis Center.
