A&M Drops SWAC Home Opener to Pine-Bluff, 75-59








 Box Score / Photo Gallery / The Alabama A&M women’s basketball team dropped its first SWAC game of the season against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home, 75-69 on Saturday Jan. 9 in Elmore Gym. The Bulldogs were led by Katrich Williams’ 26 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field. Williams is one point away from her 1,000th career point. Whiquitta Tobar tallied eight points, behind a 4-of-5 performance from  the charity stripe. Shaurice Miller chipped in with seven points and a team-high five boards. With the loss, A&M drops to 6-6 on the season, and 2-1 in the conference. The team is back on action Mon. Jan. 11 when they host Mississippi Valley for a 5:30 p.m. tip.

 

Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored the first points of the game off a triple by Laquisha Slaton. The Bulldogs responded with a basket by Williams just under the 18 minute mark to put A&M on the scoreboard. The Golden Lions went on a 10-0 run over a three-plus span to take a 15-4 cushion at the 14:51 mark. A&M responded with a 6-2 run to cut it to 17-10 with just over 12 minutes to play. UAPB pushed the spread to 19 (40-21) heading into the lockerroom, however.

 

Williams led all A&M scorers with seven points. Johnson chipped in with five. The Bulldogs were held to a 33.3 percent shooting clip (7-for-21), while Arkansas-Pine Bluff shot 43.8 percent (14-for-32) from the field.

 

In the second 20, the Golden Lions increased their lead to as many as 22 points, 60-38, midway through the period. A three-pointer by Chelsea Marshall cut it to 60-41, but UAPB continued to widen the margin as the Bulldogs were never able to recover from the deficit.

 

For the Lions, Slaton led her team with 19 points in 35 minutes of action. Tashayla Jackson and Shay Holmes scored 12 and 11 points, respectively. Jasmine blanks chipped in with seven points off the bench.

 

The Bulldogs were outrebounded 42-31 for the game. They host Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Jan. 11. The game is slated for 5:30 p.m.
