Box Score / Whiquitta Tobar posted her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 assists as the Alabama A&M women’s basketball team defeated the Hornets of Alabama State, 73-63, in Elmore Gym on Saturday Feb. 13. Katrich Williams led A&M with 22 points off 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Shaurice Miller was a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. With the victory, the Bulldogs sweep the season series with ASU and improve to 12-9 overall, including 8-4 in the SWAC. A&M is back in action on Sat. Feb. 20 when it hosts Southern beginning at 4 p.m.
In the second half, the Bulldogs led by as many as 17, 56-39, at the 11:09 mark. The Hornets scored eight straight unanswered to slice into the advantage to cut it to 58-49 with just over seven minutes to play. ASU would get no closer than that for the remainder of the half, however.
As a team, the Bulldogs shot 47 percent from the field (23-for-49), while holding Alabama State to a 37.5 shooting clip (24-for-64). Nesfayia Watkins chipped in with nine points and pulled down four off the glass. Williams also added five steals, three assists, and two rebounds. A&M’s bench outscored the Hornet bench 27-22, but Alabama State held a 44-32 edge on the boards.
Tanika Jackson led all game-scorers with 29 points and 10 rebounds. Shanice Merritt tallied nine points and five boards.
The Bulldogs host Southern on Feb. 20. The game is slated to tip at 4 p.m.
