NORMAL—After four years and ten tries, Alabama A&M men’s basketball coach Vann Pettaway captured his first victory over the Hornets of Alabama State University 75-60. The win secured the sweep of the Hornets Saturday night at Elmore Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (6-8, 3-2 SWAC) were led by freshman Demarquelle Tabb and senior Jonathan Inman with 16 points each. Tabb finished the game with six rebounds while Inman pulled in seven. Senior Desmond Jackson added 12 points and five rebounds.
The Maroon & White outscored Alabama State in points in the paint 36-24 and second chance points 18-10. The A&M bench combined for 54 points compared the Hornets 21. Forty-four of those points came from Inman, Tabb, and Jackson.
The first half saw the Hornets hold on to their only lead of the game for seven minutes and forty seconds. A&M would dominate from there. State finished the first half 12 for 28 for 43 percent but the Bulldogs 52% off of 13 of 25 shooting help them to a 38-32 half-time lead.
The second half was all Maroon & White as the Hornets couldn’t answer for the dominating post play and second chance points. The Bulldogs largest lead was 21 at the 5:29 mark. They completed the second session outscoring ASU 20-12 in the paint, 11-1 in second chance points and 30-11 off the bench.
Over 4,000 people attended the annual tradition and saw A&M out-rebound the Hornets 35 to 22.
Chris Duncan scored 17 points and Tramaine Butler added 13 points and five steals for Alabama State.
A&M will return to action on Saturday, January 22, when they welcome Alcorn State University to a 6 p.m. contest on “The Hill”.
