BOXSCORE
HOUSTON – The Alabama A&M men’s basketball team fell 65-61 to the Tigers of Texas Southern University in their first stop of their SWAC Texas swing.
Senior forward Bo Amusa led the Bulldogs (8-9, 5-3 SWAC) with 16 points while senior guard Cornelius Hester added 15, but struggled from the field, making just six of 20 shots.
The Bulldogs trailed 34-30 at the half, but made a run at Texas Southern in the second, tying it at 54 with 4:01 remaining on the clock. Texas Southern reeled off the next seven points for a 61-54 lead, capped by dunks from Jones and Galloway. The Maroon & White got as close as 61-59 with 46 seconds left, but the Tigers hit four free throws to close out the contest.
Travele Jones scored 15 points and Lawre Johnson-Danner and Kevin Galloway had 11 points each for the Tigers (9-10, 7-1), who will remain atop the league along with the winner of Saturday’s Jackson State-Mississippi Valley State game.
A&M will play at Prairie View A&M on Monday, Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. Though Prairie View was below .500 in SWAC play, the game is equally as important. A win would help the Bulldogs’ positioning heading into the SWAC tournament.
