NORMAL – The Alabama A&M basketball teams open the 2011-2012 season on Friday, November 11.  Head coach Willie Hayes opened a new era with a 72-63 loss to Tulane University while tenth year head coach Altherias Warmley and her squad fell 86-55 to Vanderbilt Commodores.

In the women’s contest A&M was led by 25 points and eight rebounds from All-American candidate Whiquitta Tobar. Shundray Davis added 13 points and nine rebounds. Outside of the two guards, the Lady Bulldogs did not get much scoring output, as no one else recorded more than five points.

The Commodores shot 48.5% from the field, including 45.0% from three. Size and depth both proved to be a factor, as Vanderbilt outscored the Maroon & White in the paint, 38-28, as well as off the bench, 23-9.

In New Orleans, Louisiana the Hayes squad (0-1) scored the opening basket of the 2011-12 season, but the Green Wave scored the next seven and never relinquished the lead.

Casey Cantey led all scorers in the game with 19 points for the Bulldogs and was the only member of the squad to reach double figures. A&M did outrebound Tulane, 37-34, including 10 offensive boards and outscored the Greenwave in the second half 35-30.

The men’s team will open their home slate on Monday, November 14, when Talladega College comes into Elmore Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. contest.

The women’s team will travel Columbia, South Carolina for their second contest of the year to challenge the University of South Carolina to a 6 p.m. contest the same evening.
