Champaign - Senior Guard Whiquitta Tobar led three Lady Bulldogs in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as Alabama A&M upset bid against the University of Illinois fell short Wednesday evening at the Assembly Hall.
A&M trailed by 13 at the break, 40-27, despite shooting 32 percent, thanks to stout defense and 13 offensive rebounds. The Lady Bulldogs stayed within striking distance for most of the second half and pulled within nine 55-46, with a jumper from Jasmine Sanders with 10:19 left. However, that would be as close as A&M (5-5) would get.
In addition to Tobar’s 15 points, junior Nadra Robertson added 13 points, and sophomore Alyssa Strickland had 12 for the Maroon and White, who shot 36 percent for the game.
Kersten Magrum scored 19 points to lead Illinois (6-7). The Fighting Illini out rebounded the Lady Bulldogs 37-32 and made 10-16 free throws for the win.
A&M will now prepare for the start of the SWAC conference play as they will travel Jackson, MS to take on the Tigers of Jackson State University on Tuesday, Jan. 3, at 5:30 p.m.
