NORMAL—Junior Casey Cantey scored a season high of 23 points as the Alabama A&M Bulldogs topped the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions 74-52 Monday night in the T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.
With the win the Bulldogs improve to 10-10 overall and 7-4 in the SWAC.
Daniel Broughton gave the Golden Lions their first lead on the contest 5-4 in the opening half with a free throw jumper at the 15:46 mark. The Maroon and White kept the game close not allowing UAPB to open no more than a four point lead in the first. A&M took a 32-29 lead into halftime.
The first half saw Maroon & White shoot 2 for 5 from the three-point line and 42% from the field (13-29) as Cantey led the A&M bench charge with 13 points while DeMarquelle Tabb scored six points and grabbed five boards. He finished the game with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Golden Lions (4-19, 4-7 SWAC) struggled from the field in the second half, hitting only 6 of 18 attempts. For the game they were 2 of 13 from beyond the three-point arc. The Lions did convert 13 offensive boards into 14 second chance points but would get no closer than eight points of the Bulldogs lead.
Daniel Broughton topped the Golden Lions with 10 points.
Over four years, one month, one day and 12 hours had passed since head coach Vann Pettaway defeated the Golden Lions.
The win also marked his 450th career victory at the helm of the men’s basketball program.
Next for the Bulldogs is in-state rival Alabama State University on Saturday, Feb. 12. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
