NORMAL – The Alabama A&M men’s and women’s tennis teams completed the 2011 home season with a women’s win over Alabama State and losses to West Alabama.
On Thursday, April 7, the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Hornets 4-0 with a win in doubles and three in singles competition. The win boosts the overall record to 5-7. Two days later the women’s team fell to the University of West Alabama 4-5.
The Lady Bulldogs Shannon Warner and Denise Cherry picked up the lone doubles win 8-3. The team of Jasmine Cherry and Kara Kennemore dropped their match 3-8. With the injury bug biting A&M UWA earned the third and final win in doubles securing a comfortable 2-0 lead. D. Cherry defeated West Alabama’s Angy Cuellan 6-1, 6-3. Warner followed up with a 6-2, 7-5 win. AAMU final point of the game came when J. Cherry defeated Katy Shoptangh 6-1, 4-6, and 6-4. West Alabama then picked up two the final two points of the match with a Dasha Popova win over Christa Rogers 6-0, 6-0. Then with only five players available UWA earned a DNP and a 4-3 victory over Alabama A&M.
The Bulldogs, weaken by Anthony Pickard II injury, was left with just five players to compete against the Hornets. A&M was able to pick singles victory when Desta Sandy posted a 6-4, 6-3 singles win over Alabama State’s number one player. ASU then went on to post two wins in doubles and four wins in singles and earn a 5-1 victory over A&M.
On Saturday, April 10, versus UWA, their luck would get no better as A&M earned two points by recording Sandy and Nicholas Burger singles wins. Sandy and Burger also posted an 8-4 win in doubles. After that it was all Tigers as they earned the doubles point with two victories and four singles points moving on to a 5-2 win.
Next up both teams will travel to Florence, Alabama for a 2 p.m. contest with the University of North Alabama on Tuesday, April 12. That match will end the 2011 regular season for Maroon & White tennis.
On Friday, April 15, in Alexandria, Louisiana the 2011 SWAC championships will begin with both teams competing for the first time since 2006. More information on the SWAC championship can be found by following this link:
