A&M goes 2-0 on first day of SWAC volleyball tournament

Jackson, MS- On day one of the 2012 SWAC volleyball tournament, the Lady Bulldogs finished 2-0 with victories over the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State University.

In game one, A&M defeated the Golden Lions, three sets to none. This was the second meeting between the teams in the last six years, and the first in the tournament with head coach Nedra Brown leading the Lady Bulldogs.

The Maroon & White dominated play, and completed the match unscathed, winning in straight sets. Each match was won by a margin of 10 points or more; scores are as follows: 25-11, 25-14, and 25-15

The second game for the Lady Bulldogs was against a well-known foe, the Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State. This was the third meeting of the season for the SWAC Eastern division rivals. The Maroon & White edged MVSU in the regular season, winning both meetings (3-0 and 3-1).

Both teams went into the game knowing what to expect of their opponent. Valley began the match with a sense of vengeance. The Devilettes outscored the Lady Bulldogs in set one, 28-26 to take a 1-0 match lead. Valley nearly took set two; but was edged out by the Maroon & White 25-23.

The Lady Bulldogs went on to win both sets two and three (25-14, 25-23) to secure their third victory over the Devilettes this year, improving to 2-0 on the day.

A&M will be back in action on Sunday the 18^th at 9 a.m. when they compete against familiar tournament opponent Prairie View A&M University.
