Hayes and Company Falls to UAPB

Box Score

PINE BLUFF – The second half of the SWAC season did not start well for the Bulldogs as they fell 81-75 to the Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday night.

Alabama A&M gave up a career night to UAPB’s Daniel Broughton who finished with 20 points and 19 rebounds.

The 30 percent (6-20) from the field in the first half did not help either.

A&M scored 25 points and was down 31-25 at intermission before scoring a season best 50 in the second half on 17-37 (46%) from the field and 7 of 13 (54%) from the three point line.

The Golden Lions went ahead for good six minutes into the game and took their biggest lead, 48-34, on two UAPB free throws with 13:42 to play. Two 3-pointers by Jeremy Ingram, plus one by Ellis, fueled a 13-1 Bulldogs run that cut the lead to 49-47 with 9:46 left.

Pine Bluff responded with its own 16-4 run over the next four minutes, and Alabama A&M never threatened again.

The 75 points is only the third time this season the Maroon & White have score 70 or more.

The Golden Lions out-scored A&M 30-18 in points in the paint and 16-14 in points off turnovers.  The Bulldogs out did UAPB 11-10 in second chance points and 22-7 in bench opportunities in a game that saw two lead changes.

Brandon Ellis finished with a career best 20 points and seven rebounds while Jerome Hunter posted 10 points and seven boards.

The Bulldogs will travel to Itta Bena, Mississippi on Monday February 5, for a 7:30 p.m. contest.  The game can be listened to "Live" on WJAB 90.9.
