Championship Volleyball squad releases 2012 schedule

2012 Volleyball Schedule

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Traditional powers and conference rivals highlight the 2012 Alabama A&M volleyball schedule.

All told, the Lady Bulldogs will play 15 matches against non-conference programs and two against teams that played in the 2011 NCAA tournament.

"Our nonconference schedule gives us a great opportunity to be tested early in the season and will prepare us for conference play," AAMU head coach Nedra Brown said.

The Lady Bulldogs will open the season at the Belmont Invitational where they will meet Northern Colorado, TCU and Belmont in the Curb Event Center Aug. 24-25.

From there, A&M will open their home schedule with Albany State on Aug. 28 then await interstates and hotel breakfasts; with three straight matches away from home. The road stretch begins at the Morehead State tournament in Morehead, Ken. A trip to Chattanooga, Tenn. for a date with UT Chattanooga, on Sept. 4th.  Then on Sept. 7-8 the Maroon & White will participate in the Ole Miss tournament in Oxford, Miss.

Three days later AAMU will welcome cross-town rival Alabama-Huntsville to Elmore Gymnasium Sept. 11.  Then it’s on the road again with trips to Memphis Tenn. for the University of Memphis Tournament Sept. 14-15 then Martin, Tenn. on Sept. 18 for a date with UT Martin.

“We have defeated UAH twice since I have been at the helm of the volleyball program so I know they will be ready for us this go round,” Brown stated.

Southwestern Athletic Conference play begins on the 21st with Alcorn State visiting “The Hill” then dates with Tennessee State on Sept. 25 and the University of Alabama Sept. 27.

As part of divisional conference play, the Lady Bulldogs will face Mississippi Valley, Jackson State, Alcorn State, and Alabama State twice during the regular season.

The home league games will be few and far between with Valley on Oct. 1, Alabama State on Oct. 31 and a repeat of the last two championship games in the conference tournament on Nov. 1 versus Jackson State.

“The Alabama State and Jackson State matches are always the must see events on our schedule,” said head coach Nedra Brown.

Oct. 9 begins the longest road trip for A&M in 2012 with five straight away from the friendly confines of T. M. Elmore.  They visit Alabama-Birmingham on Oct. 9, Jackson State on Oct. 16, Albany State on Oct. 19, Alcorn State on Oct. 22 and Mississippi Valley on Oct. 23rd

The 2012 SWAC Tournament is scheduled to be held Nov. 15-19 at a site to be determined.

“I will definitely say we are looking to return to the championship squad we were,” said Brown.  “Last year we were humbled and learned from the loss.”

“We never play a soft schedule as you can see with multiple SEC programs we face and the teams that made it to the NCAA tournament on our schedule,” Brown quoted.
