Bulldogs & Tigers a Storied Past

BIRMINGHAM – The Alabama A&M Bulldogs and the Tuskegee Golden Tigers will meet on Saturday, September 1st, at 7:00 p.m. at Legion Field for the 49th time. This will be both teams’ season openers.

The game will be a part of three games played at Legion field in two days during Labor Day weekend in Birmingham, Alabama.

Currently A&M holds a 25-19-4 lead and has claimed the last two competitions and the last three out of four with the Tigers last victory coming in 2008.

Last year in the second annual Louis Crews Classic in front of the third largest crowd to witness a contest in the 16 year old stadium, the Bulldog defense held the Tigers through the first quarter not allowing their former SIAC rivals to put points on the board until 1:36 remained in the second. That’s when TU’s Michael Thornton rushed in from the two yard line. That would be the Tigers only score as the PAT failed.

Offensively AAMU did not fare well as quarterback Deaunte Mason led the team with 62 yards passing, his lowest output in the pocket during his career, but connected with junior G’Alonzo Milton for the only passing TD of the game. Mason rushed for 91 yards his highest total of the season for the second touchdown for the Maroon & White. Junior running back Kaderius Lacey rushed for 61 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.

"They'll be a much-improved team than they were last year," Jones said. "Coach Slater is always going to have those guys ready to play. We have to be ready to match their intensity. If we're not ready to play, we're not going to like the outcome of the ballgame."

A&M begins where they left off at as they fell 16-15 in head coach Anthony Jones fifth SWAC title contest in his 11 years on “The Hill” in 2011.

"This year the guys have set some very, very lofty goals for themselves," Jones said. "As coaches, we're just going to try to work to do everything we can to give these young men an opportunity to achieve those goals."
