Men's Basketball Defeats Grambling State University 78-53

Box Score

NORMAL – Alabama A&M men’s basketball extended its win streak to two after their 78-53 win over the Tigers of Grambling State on Wednesday night.

After scoring 10 points in the first 20 minutes Jeremy Crutcher only had to score two more before taking a much deserved break finishing with 12.  Junior center Justan Banks led the team posting his second career double double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.  G. A. Hill and Demarquelle Tabb each posted 12 points while freshman Tyler Davis scored a season high 10 points in 19 minutes.

A&M used a 38-18 run of points in the paint, 20-8 score in points off turnovers and 21-10 advantage in second chance points to claimed their first win in 2013.

The score was tied only once at the 19:03 mark 3-3.  Banks then caught a pass from Crutcher to slam home a 5-3 lead the Bulldogs would never relinquish.  AAMU’s lead extended into double digits on five different occasions in the first but the Tigers consistent play and 48% from the field kept the game close.  A&M would eventually take a 39-30 lead at half-time.

Alabama A&M opened the second half on a 46-14 run that extended to the 2:54 mark giving the Hayes led squad their biggest lead of the season.

The Tigers could not answer the potent offense attack by the Bulldogs.  Thirteen different players contributed time on the court for A&M as Grambling shot eight of 24 from the field for 33 percent compared to 15 of 35 for 43 percent by the Bulldogs in the second half.

This was the first time in the coach Hayes era that A&M has started the Southwestern Athletic Conference season undefeated.  It also marks the first time the Bulldogs have defeated two straight division I opponents and avenged the season sweep they suffered during the 2011-12 season.  It also extends their home record to 4-1 on the year.

The second game in six days awaits A&M as the Tigers of Jackson State venture on “The Hill” for a 7:30 p.m. contests on Friday, January 4th in Elmore.
