JACKSON, MS - Alabama A&M University opened up the 2013 SWAC Volleyball Tournament with a 3-1 (25-19,25-21,26-24,25-13) win over Prairie View A&M on Saturday at the Lee E. Williams Athletic & Assembly Center.
AAMU (10-26) posted 57 kills in the match, five more than PVAMU's 52. The Lady Bulldogs registered 51 assists, with 48 of them coming from Ashley Forman. AAMU tacked on nine blocks to overpower the Lady Panthers.
Leslie Ekpe recorded 15 kills with a hitting percent of .464. Rebecca Cortez led the back line with a game high 19 digs. Kyanna Sales posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. Maria Ramos also posted double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs.
PVAMU (9-19) was led by Candyce Alexander's game high 20 kills and 10 digs. Kelsey Espinosa registered a team high 41 assists and 12 digs to assist the Lady Panthers.
Lakeisha Allen also lposted in double figures with 12 digs to help PVAMU's defense.

Alabama A&M University held off Texas Southern to claim a 3-2 win to advance to the semi-final round of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Vollyeball Tournament on Saturday inside the Lee E. Williams Athletics & Assembly Center.
AAMU (10-19) hit .625 for the match earning the match with set scores of 25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 23-25, 15-10.
Savannah Blackiston, Leslie Ekpe and Ashundria McNeal powered the Lady Bulldogs finishing in double figures on the offensive end. Blackiston led all players with 18 points, Ekpe followed with 15 and McNeal chipped in 11.
Ashley Forman paced the floor with 55 assists. Rebecca Cortez added 16 digs and Kyanna Sales pitched in 10 to complement eight kills.
The Lady Bulldogs led 10-7 before closing the match on a 5-3 run fueled by a pair of kills from Blackiston. AAMU collected 10 blocks.
TSU (14-11) was guided by Sarah Wooten's 26 assists with Jyra Churchill pitching in 20. Robyn Shannon led the Lady Tigers with 15 kills. Kali Fluke added 14 with Veronica Azubuike finishing with 13.
Erin Spivey led the backline with 11 digs.
