Bulldogs fall to Southern 81-67

Box Score

BATON ROUGE -- Southern opened the game on a 14-2 run and led by at least seven the rest of the way. That run put A&M in a hole early that they were never able to recover from.

Southern (16-10, 10-2), outshot Alabama A&M 48 percent (26 of 54) to 42 percent (24 of 57). The Jaguars struggled from the stripe, 22 of 32 compared to 12 of 17 for Bulldogs, but registered a 14 to 4 assist-to-turnover ratio compared to A&M’s 15 to 10.

Demarquelle Tabb led Alabama A&M (9-16, 5-9) with 22 points of 10-of-14 shooting but the other four Bulldog starters shot a combined 13 of 34.  Freshman Nicholas West scored a season high 13 points in 26 minutes of action. Jeremy Crutcher scored 11 points and dished out eight assists.  Brandon Ellis finished the game with 11 points and five boards.

Malcolm Miller and Derrick Beltran scored 21 points apiece in Southern University's wire-to-wire 81-67 win over Alabama A&M on Monday in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

This marks the sixth 20-point game of Demarquelle Tabb's career.

Only one player for the Bulldogs shot better than 50 percent from the field as A&M registered eight of 28 from the field (28%) and 4 for 11 from the three point line (36%) in the first half.  The Willie Hayes squad cut the lead to seven twice in the first but runs by the Jaguars would end both attempts to get back into the ball game.  SU would take a 33-23 halftime lead.

“Southern has a great team with a lot of transfers who can play,” said coach Hayes.  “I like the way we played with the amount of energy we gave.”

The second half was more of the same for SU but A&M was able to shoot the ball with better accuracy connecting on 16 of 29 from the field for 55%.

Unfortunately Southern improved their shooting as well hitting 15 of 26 for 58 percent.

Tabb scored 17 of his 22 points in the second while West hit 10 of his 13.

The Bulldogs was able to cut into the lead working it down to 10 and 11 multiple times.

Alabama A&M hit 71 percent from the charity stripe on 12 of 17 but was seven of 19 from the three-point line.

Next up A&M will host Texas Southern University on Saturday, Feb. 23rd with a tip-off set for 5 p.m. in Elmore gymnasium.
