A&M opens SWAC Play with a victory on the road

Box Score ITTA BENA, Miss – Ashundria McNeal recorded 10 kills for Alabama A&M (2-14, 1-0 SWAC) in a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-18) victory at Mississippi Valley (6-12, 0-1 SWAC) Friday night in Itta Bena, Miss.

The victory was A&M's first on the road this season.

Ashley Forman ran the A&M offense, recording 32 assists, three kills and a .500 hitting percentage while McNeal hit .429 and posted six blocks on the night.

"We got great play from everybody tonight, with a very balanced offensive attack," said Alabama A&M's head coach Nedra Brown. "Our defensive play was even better."

Rebecca Cortez recorded a match-high eight digs, while fellow teammate Kyanna Sales added six for the Lady Bulldogs.

Alabama A&M earned a 25-16 victory in game one behind McNeal's five kills while Leslie Ekpe added four. AAMU won five of the final six points, three of which came off kills by McNeal, to win game one. The Lady Bulldogs hit .433 in the game while Valley struggled offensively, hitting just .267.

In the second set, the Lady Bulldogs were down by four points 24-20, when they went on a 6-0 run, which included crucial defensive blocks by Ekpe and McNeal to take game two, 26-24.

A&M fell behind early in game three as Valley won the first two points, but the Lady Bulldogs stormed back, winning eight of the next nine to take an 15-10 lead. The Maroon and White closed out the game by winning six of the final seven points to earn the 3-0 match victory.

The Lady Bulldogs will continue on to the Reservation to face the Alcorn State Lady Braves, Saturday at 6 p.m.
