Lady Bulldogs drop thriller in Jacksonville

Box Score

Jacksonville, Ala.-With the field illuminated under the bright lights, the stage was set for a thriller in Jacksonville, Ala. on Friday night.

The Lady Bulldogs playing in their first away game of the season were equal to the task.

The Maroon & White obviously brought their best into the match against the Gamecocks as they played at an extremely high rate and with a clear will to win. After just 10 minutes of play, it was clear all those in attendance at JSU soccer field were going to see an exhilarating match.

Scoring nearly opened at the 36-minute mark. A JSU shot beat sophomore keeper, Marissa Oehler but was denied by the right upright, keeping the game at nil-nil.

The action really picked up in the last 15 minutes of the half. At the11 minute mark, Oehler pulled off a huge save by racing toward the top of the 18-yard box with an out-stretched right arm. The Lady Bulldogs were than saved again by the post in the ninth minute mark after a JSU shot came in from wide left beating the keeper, but failing to beat the crossbar.

With just four minutes left in the half, it again was evident that the JSU soccer field posts were on the side of the Maroon & White.  After a cross from the right side came into the six-yard box, a Gamecocks attacker unleashed a header that screamed past the A&M defenders and slammed off the cross bar keeping the scoreboard clear.

Freshman substitute Chanel Veasley recorded the only shot for the Maroon & White in the first 45 minutes. What was arguably the best potential scoring chance for the visiting team was halted by a hard foul with just two minutes remaining on the game clock.

The second 45-minute period began as the first ended, with a high tempo and an electric energy.  After a scoreless 15-minute period, the score was finally altered. Despite playing amazing defense, the Maroon & White gave up a goal at the 33-minute mark.

Although they fell behind, the Lady Bulldogs' will did not waiver. Despite maintaining their energy and fight, the team gave up a second goal minutes later with 28 minutes remaining in the contest.

Friday night's action between the Lady Bulldogs and Gamecocks was far from a disappointment. It was fast paced and action packed.

At the end of the 90 minutes, the Maroon & White were on the losing end of a 4-0 game.

They will return to action this Sunday, September 8, at home versus Winthrop. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Lady Bulldog field in Normal, Ala.
