Volleyball Posts Sweep Over Grambling

HUNTSVILLE --- The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs volleyball team clinched their fifth Southwestern Athletic Conference win this season by sweeping Grambling State (25-23, 25-14, 25-23) in T.M. Elmore Gym on Friday.

With the win, AAMU improved to 6-17 overall, 5-4 in SWAC play. The loss drops Grambling State to 5-11 on the season while carrying a 3-7 mark in the league.

The Lady Bulldogs outperformed the Lady Tigers offensively. AAMU racked up 50 kills paired with a .200 attack percentage.  Also, A&M were out-killing Grambling 40-26, and out-digging 41-26.

After winning the first set (25-23), A&M came out firing to secure the second set (25-14). In the third set, the Lady Tigers battled back and traded points with the Lady Bulldogs. However, the Lady Bulldogs were able to clinch the final frame 25-23.

AAMU made the difference at the net as Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) tallied up 17 kills out of 37 attempts to go along with seven digs. McNeal also added seven digs and two block solos.  Jaelin Gant (Birmingham, Al.) added eight kills on a match-high .250 attacking percentage while Courtney Oliver (Detroit, Mich.) and Terra Brooks (Tampa, Fl.) each chipped in with five kills.

Staying on the defensive side, Rebecca Pierce (French Lick, Ind.) registered a team-high 10 digs and Gant contributed seven digs. Brooks chipped in with five and Tamar Davis (Inglewood, Calif.) added three digs on the night.

Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) dished out 32 assists and picked up seven digs while Brooks and Pierce each finished with two assists.

The Lady Bulldogs look to pick up their sixth conference win in as many tries today against University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in their "Dig Pink" match. The match is slated for 2 p.m.at T.M. Elmore Gym.
