Lady Bulldogs gearing up for SWAC volleyball tournament

JACKSON, Miss. -- Led by the SWAC Player of the Year Ashundria McNeal and the league's top assists player in Riley Balsmeyer, the Lady Bulldogs will take on Prairie View A&M in their first game of the 2016 SWAC Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Bulldogs, the league's No. 4 seed, will take on No. 5 Prairie View A&M at 1:30 p.m. in the second match of the day. Top-seeded Alabama State plays No. 8 Grambling State in the opener at 11 a.m.

The tournament runs through Nov. 20 and is hosted by Jackson State. In the other matches, No. 3 seed Southern plays No. 6 Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 4 p.m. and No. 2 Texas Southern faces No. 7 Jackson State, the defending SWAC champion, at 6:30 p.m.

This season, the Lady Bulldogs and Prairie View split their two meetings, with the home team winning 3-1 each time.

McNeal had a double-double (12 kills, 11 digs) in the win Nov. 5 and Balsmeyer had 22 assists and 5 service aces.

McNeal, a senior, is ranked seventh in the nation in scoring with 586.6 points and eighth in kills 501. She leads the conference in both categories.

Junior setter Balsmeyer leads the SWAC with 860 assists and has a league-leading 7.29 assists per set average.
