Volleyball Splits Pair of Conference Matches

The Alabama A&M University volleyball team split a pair of conference matches this weekend in the Student Health and Wellness Center. The Lady Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision to Texas Southern Friday night before defeating Prairie View A&M, 3-1 Saturday evening.

How It Happened
On Friday, Texas Southern claimed the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 27-25. The Lady Bulldogs then won the third set 25-19, but the Lady Tigers responded with a 25-20 set win to claim the victory.

Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) paced the Lady Bulldogs with 17 kills. She also finished with three blocks and two service aces. Junior Courtney Oliver (Detroit, Mich.) added nine kills followed by eight from Sophomore Jaelin Gant (Birmingham, Ala.).

Freshman Nina Biggs (Houston, Tex.) anchored the defense with a match-best 12 digs. McNeal added 11 digs and Gant chipped in 10. Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) led the Lady Bulldogs with 37 assists.

The Lady Bulldogs posted game scores of 25-17, 25-22, 21-25, and 25-13 in the win over Prairie View A&M Saturday. AAMU used a balanced attack against the Lady Panthers as four different Lady Bulldogs posted four kills or more in the match.

McNeal led with 12 kills, 11 digs and three service aces. Oliver added nine kills and three block solos. Gant contributed six kills, nine digs and one service ace. Terra Brooks (Tampa, Fla.) chipped in four kills and two service aces. Balsmeyer recorded 22 assists in the victory.  

The Lady Bulldogs return to T.M. Elmore Gym on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. to host Alabama State. They will then host Alcorn State for a doubleheader on Monday, Nov. 14 at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
