Volleyball Drops 3-2 Match Against Southern

BATON ROUGE, LA. --- The Alabama A&M volleyball team forced a fifth-set but ultimately fell 3-2 to Southern University on Friday afternoon. The Jaguars won using set scores of 25-22, 22-25, 18-25, 25-22, and 15-12.

Individually for A&M, Senior Ashundria McNeal had a double-double with 25 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Terra Brooks had her first double-double with a career-high 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior Riley Balsmeyer racked up 40 assists and seven digs, while recording six kills with a .600 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Tamar Davis led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 digs and freshman Nina Biggs recorded 13 for A&M. Junior Courtney Oliver helped on defense with one block single and three block assists. She also added three digs and four kills with a .400 hitting percentage.

In set one, the Jaguars took an early 14-5 advantage. The Lady Bulldogs responded with three straight points and Southern went ahead to extend the lead 18-11. An 11-7 run highlighted by two kills from McNeal cut the Jaguars lead to two. However, a kill from Southern would help the Jaguars close out the set one, 25-22.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated offensively in the second set with a .350 hitting percentage. A&M led the entire second set to take a 25-22 lead. The third set was tight featuring nine ties and six lead changes.   The Jaguars went on a 3-0 run after the Lady Bulldogs took a 24-15 lead. However, A&M closed the set out with a kill from McNeal.

In set four, A&M got off to a slow start offensively as the Jaguars took a 5-2 lead early on. A 14-7 run by the Lady Bulldogs gave them a 16-12 lead over Southern. The Jaguars responded with five unanswered points to tie the game at 17. The game would tie four more times before a kill by Southern would force a fifth set.

In the deciding frame, AAMU jumped off to a 3-0 lead. The Lady Bulldogs and Jaguars tied five times in the fifth set. Tied at 10, Southern took a 14-10 lead with three A&M attack errors and a kill. A kill by Balsmeyer and an attack error by the Jaguars would allow the Lady Bulldogs to cut the lead by two.  Southern responded with a kill to secure the victory 15-12.
