Volleyball Falls to Nicholls State 3-0 Friday Afternoon

LAFAYETTE, La. ---The Alabama A&M Lady Bulldogs volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to Nicholls State University in the first day of the Sawyer Camilo Memorial Classic Tournament on Friday afternoon in Lafayette, La.

Nicholls State took a 2-0 lead by winning the first set 25-21 and the second set by a 25-14. The Colonels captured the win with a 25-20 victory in the third set.

Despite the loss, Senior Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) led AAMU with 13 kills while adding six block assists and seven digs. Freshman Terra Brooks (Tampa, Fl.) collected eight kills. Junior Courtney Oliver (Detroit, Mich.) hit a team-best .500 clip and collected five kills in the loss and four block assists.

The Lady Bulldogs led the majority of the first set. As the Lady Bulldogs took a 20-16 lead, Nicholls State gained two points to cut A&M's lead by two. Freshman Spenser Parks(Louisville, Ky.) captured a kill to keep the Lady Bulldogs in control of the game. However, a kill and two attack errors gave the Colonels their first lead of the game, 22-21. A ball handling error, attack error and service ace gave Nicholss State a 1-0 lead after one stanza.

The Colonels defense kept AAMU to a .100 hitting percentage in the second, its worst in the match. With A&M leading 21-18, Nicholls State went on to piece together an unanswered seven-point rally to take the set.

The third set was A&M's strongest offensive set. The Lady Bulldogs managed 12 kills and a .206 hitting percentage, but it was not enough to overcome a .229, 12 kill performance from the Colonels.

Junior Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) dished out 23 assists to lead the Lady Bulldogs while adding nine digs on the day.  Freshman Nina Biggs (Houston, Tex.) added seven digs for A&M.

The Lady Bulldogs will continue tournament play tomorrow with the first match at 10 a.m. against the host University of Louisiana at Lafayette and then will finish the tournament against Air Force Academy at 12:30 p.m. Live stats are available HERE.
