Volleyball Defeats Grambling State 3-2

RUSTON, La. ---The Alabama A&M University volleyball team defeated Grambling State, 3-2, in a five-set match on Saturday afternoon in Ruston, LA.

The Lady Bulldogs held-off the Lady Tigers by set scores of 25-19, 22-25, 13-25, 25-17, and 15-10.

Senior Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 25 kills and 11 digs in the win while hitting .237. Sophomore Jaelin Gant (Birmingham, Ala.) contributed nine digs, eight kills, two service aces, and four blocks. Junior Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) contributed a season-high 42 assists, 11 digs and four kills.

The Match
After splitting the two opening sets, Grambling jumped out to a 20-6 lead on AAMU in the third set. The score was 24-9 before the Lady Bulldogs broke into double digits. AAMU had a late flurry after going on a 4-0 run to get to 24-13 but couldn't get any closer, falling 25-13.

In the fourth set, the Lady Bulldogs hit .219 to GSU's -.083. Tied at eight, the Lady Bulldogs used kills to slowly pull away at 21-16 sparking a GSU timeout. After the timeout, A&M continued to dominate with three unanswered points. Grambling added a kill and got within six, but a GSU service error would allow the Lady Bulldogs to close the door 25-17.

In the deciding fifth set, Grambling scored first and took a 3-1 lead. The Lady Tigers had the advantage at 5-4 before the teams traded points to see ties at 6,7,8,9 and 10. Tied at 10, three attack errors by Grambling and a kill by McNeal and Gant made it 15-10 as AAMU clinched the win.  

The Lady Bulldogs are home next weekend for their first home opener of the season against Jackson State University on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Wellness Center at 6:30 p.m.
