Volleyball Falls Twice in UT Martin Tri-Match

MARTIN, Tenn. --- The Alabama A&M volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Monday in their first Tri-Match of the season at UT Martin. The Lady Bulldogs fell 3-0 to the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona University before slipping 3-0 to UT Martin in the nightcap.

Match One: AAMU 0, NAU 3
In the day's opener, NAU hit .506 from the floor to down the Lady Bulldogs with set scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-13.

A&M Senior Ashundria McNeal (Memphis, Tenn.) led the Lady Bulldogs with nine kills while Junior Courtney Oliver (Detroit, Mich.) added six kills to go with one service ace.  Classmate Riley Balsmeyer (Paoli, Ind.) chipped in 12 assists and four digs, and Freshman Terra Brooks (Tampa, Fl.) finished with four kills, one block assist and one dig.

The Lumberjacks scored the first four points of the first set before A&M finally got on the board with one. NAU continued to dominate the set, never letting the Lady Bulldogs within four. Following four straight kills from AAMU, the Lady Bulldogs brought the score to 11-8 but the Lumberjacks would go on to outscore A&M to close out the first set.

Another tough start in the second set put AAMU down 6-0 to the Lumberjacks. A&M got on the board on a NAU service error. A kill by McNeal would give the Lady Bulldogs their second point of the game, but A&M could not keep anything going offensively as NAU kept the pressure on. NAU went ahead to close out the set with a 25-9 win to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set opened with several long rallies that fell NAU's way as AAMU trailed 6-1. Trailing 21-9, A&M found it's rhythm with back-to-back kills from McNeal and Oliver, but it wasn't enough as NAU won the set 25-13 to take the match.

Match Two: AAMU 0, UTM 3
The Lady Bulldogs faced UT Martin to close out the Tri-Match. Despite close sets, A&M fell to the Skyhawks 25-20, 25-17 and 25-17.

Freshman Spenser Parks (Louisville, KY) and classmate Astonia Gray (De Kalb, Tex.) started things off for the Lady Bulldogs with a block assist to put them on the board. A&M took an early 8-6 lead, but UTM started to slowly chip away and eventually tied the set at 12-12. The set was tied several times, the last being 16-16. The Skyhawks finally closed it out with a kill.

In the second set against UT Martin, the teams traded points and the game was tied at 5-5 before UTM slowly started to build a lead. A&M was down 8-9 until the Skyhawks went on to score seven straight points to take an eight point lead. UTM closed the set out with an A&M attack error.

In the final set, UTM took an early 6-0 lead against AAMU. A kill from McNeal and service ace from Brooks, gave the Lady Bulldogs their first two points of the set. Trailing 21-7, A&M responded with four unanswered points before UTM added two kills. Down 24-12, the Lady Bulldogs battled back with five straight points, but it wouldn't be enough as UTM answered back with a kill to win the final set and match.

Once again, McNeal powered the Lady Bulldogs attack with 10 kills to go with six digs, four block assists, and one service ace. Gray added four kills and two blocks while Parks chipped in a trio of kills. Sophomore Rebecca Pierce tallied 12 assists while Balsmeyer contributed eight.

The Lady Bulldogs are back in action this weekend in Asheville, N.C. at the UNC Asheville Invitational on Sept. 9-10. A&M will open the tournament with Stetson University on Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m.
